In 2022, and after being the only bidders for the Small Scale DAB Multiplex License in Taunton Deane. The Office of Communications (OFCOM) Awarded The Tone Community Media Group CIC the licence to operate a new SSDAB licence in the area. In 2024 this new multi channel digital broadcast network will be activated, allowing ToneFM, alongside a host of other Radio Stations and content creators to extend their reach across Taunton.
What is Small Scale DAB?
DAB stands for “Digital Audio Broadcasting”. The service provides listeners the opportunity to receive broadcasts in a higher quality format than FM, AM or MW. It is also the future of radio here in the UK. In the future traditional analogue radio signals will be turned off, in the same way that Television changed from Analogue to Digital several years ago. DAB opens up new opportunities for broadcasters and a dramatic increase in listener choice.
How does it work?
FM radio is sent out on a set frequency. For ToneFM this is 107.8. If you tune away from that frequency, you’ll lose the connection to the station you are listening to, and find static. DAB radio works differently. Many stations are sent together on one frequency and then the listener chooses their favourite which is allowed through by their radio excluding the others.
The way DAB signals are sent brings some extra benefits. This can include additional information like pictures, song names and artist information. DAB signals are also better able to work around obstacles between your radio and the transmitter, like large buildings, trees and so on and they carry their own protection against transmission errors. All in all, DAB is a much better option both for variety and quality.

We are able to offer a range of suitable transmission options, however please note the following;
All broadcasters must have the appropriate Ofcom DSP or C-DSP licence.
Discount for C-DSP licensees: 10 per cent (%).
For new services to DAB holding only one DSP licence and using no other broadcast licence, based in and producing at least half the output from a studio within a 25 mile radius of Taunton. We have up to two of these slots available in 2024 at 96kbps for £100 a month, or 128kbps at £125 a month, on 12-month direct-debit contracts. No other discounts apply.
Admin fee for mid-contract changes of information such as URL, logo, change of bit rate: £125 per amendment
